Our Dentists

Dr Bill O’ConnorDr William O'Connor

Bill graduated from Otago University with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery. He started working at Main Street Dental in 1980, then known as McKegg Cull Hawke and Murdoch. After 3 years in London he returned to Palmerston North, re-joining the practice as a Partner.

Bill enjoys all the different aspects of dentistry, and finds restoring appearance particularly interesting.

He is currently the President of the NZ Dental Association, which he enjoys. He loves golf, reading and exercise.

 

Dr Deepika SamalDr Deepika Samal

Dr Deepika Samal graduated from Otago University with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery. Born and raised in Palmerston North, she spent a year living overseas before heading down to Dunedin to study.

Her particular areas of interest include general restorative care, managing anxious patients and dental care for the elderly.

Outside of work, Deepika loves travel, reading and movies.

 

Dr Brian Hopkins (Hoppy)Dr Brian Hopkins

In 1978, after qualifying from the University of Witwatersrand South Africa with a BDS, Hoppy began work as a dentist in (then) Rhodesia. He and his wife Viv then set up practice in South Africa, where they worked until 2003. After a time in the UK working as an associate, he was offered a position at Dentalcare Palmerston North by his old classmate, Dr Graham Swanepoel. They moved to New Zealand in 2011.

Hoppy especially enjoys working with composites. This involves cosmetic work including composite veneers, fibre retained bridges and rehabs. He really enjoys being able to give patients a beautiful smile.

Hoppy’s interests include golf, motorcycles, cars and model helicopters. He and Viv ride all over New Zealand on his Harley 1200 Sportster enjoying the majestic scenery. Hoppy and Viv have been married for 40 years, and have 3 children. They have always worked together, and continue to do so today.

 

Dr Graham HughesDr Graham Hughes

Graham qualified from Bristol University in 1988 with a Degree in Dental Surgery. He became a clinical audit facilitator in 1996 and earned his Diploma in Post Graduate Dental Studies in 2001.
Graham and his family immigrated to New Zealand in 2010. He originally worked at Manawatu Dental Group, but transferred to Main Street Dental in late 2017.

Graham fulfils a number of roles within the dental field and is currently the treasurer of the local dental branch.

Graham has a preventative approach to dentistry enabling clients to reduce their dental needs.

Outside of work, Graham helps his wife raise their children and carries out voluntary work.

 

Dr Jungin Park (BDS Otago NZ)

 After qualifying in Dunedin, Jungindid a short stint for the NZ Army in Waiouru, before finally settling down in Auckland. He has been serving the dental needs of South Auckland –notably working in Papakura, Takinini, and Pukekohe. He also works at Main St Dental in Palmerston North. He has a special interest in difficult extractions (including wisdom teeth) and provides IV sedation for patients. In his spare time, he enjoys being outdoors mountain-biking & kayak-fishing –anywhere but home!

Dr Graham SwanepoelDr Graham Swanepoel

Graham graduated with a BDS (NZDREX) from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in South Africa. He then completed the New Zealand Registered Exam in Otago. Born in South Africa, he practiced in Cape Town and worked as a Clinical Demonstrator at Stellenbosch and the University of Western Cape part time for a number of years. Graham arrived in New Zealand in 1998, and has set up practices in Wanganui, Marton and Palmerston North.

Graham is particularly interested in Orthodontics, and he also enjoys crown and bridge work.

Outside of work Graham enjoys painting, squash and cycling.

 

Our Oral Surgeon

Glenn KirkGlenn Kirk

Dr Glenn Kirk completed his degree in Dentistry in 1994, and worked as a dentist for five years. He then completed his MDS in Oral Surgery in 2005, graduating with Distinction. Since graduation Glenn has practiced as a Specialist Oral Surgeon in the Manawatu for the NZDF, MidCentral District Health Board and in Private Practice. He has since been welcomed back to Otago as an external examiner for the Masters Programme.

Glenn has a strong sense of ethical duty to provide affordable and accessible Oral Surgery to his patients in a relaxed environment.

Glenn is married with 3 daughters and loves cycling.

 

Our Hygienists

Kirsten KirkKirsten Kirk

Kirsten graduated from Otago with a Dip Dent Hyg in 2004. She is particularly committed to educating adults in maintaining good oral hygiene, and how it relates to their general oral health.

Kirsten is married to Glenn Kirk, and they have 3 daughters. She enjoys reading, and coaching her daughters netball teams.

 

 

Angie OngAngie Ong

Angie graduated from AUT University in Auckland in 2016 at the top of her class with a Bachelor of Health Science in Oral Health. She has dual Scope of Practice that enables her to treat children under 18 but mainly provides hygiene treatment for patients of all ages.
She moved from Manila to Auckland in 2008 then settled permanently at Palmerston North in 2016. Angie is very good with communicating with children and enjoys showing people both young and old how to take better care of their teeth.
She never has spare time as she is always up to something. She enjoys painting, writing, and is always reading something.
