Our Dentists

Dr Bill O’ConnorDr William O'Connor

Bill graduated from Otago University with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery. He started working at Main Street Dental in 1980, then known as McKegg Cull Hawke and Murdoch. After 3 years in London he returned to Palmerston North, re-joining the practice as a Partner.

Bill enjoys all the different aspects of dentistry, and finds restoring appearance particularly interesting.

He is a member of the Executive and Board of the NZDA, which he enjoys. He loves golf, reading and exercise.


Dr Deepika SamalDr Deepika Samal

Dr Deepika Samal graduated from Otago University with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery. Born and raised in Palmerston North, she spent a year living overseas before heading down to Dunedin to study.

Her particular areas of interest include general restorative care, managing anxious patients and dental care for the elderly.

Outside of work, Deepika loves travel, reading and movies.


Dr Brian Hopkins (Hoppy)Dr Brian Hopkins

In 1978, after qualifying from the University of Witwatersrand South Africa with a BDS, Hoppy began work as a dentist in (then) Rhodesia. He and his wife Viv then set up practice in South Africa, where they worked until 2003. After a time in the UK working as an associate, he was offered a position at Dentalcare Palmerston North by his old classmate, Dr Graham Swanepoel. They moved to New Zealand in 2011.

Hoppy especially enjoys working with composites. This involves cosmetic work including composite veneers, fibre retained bridges and rehabs. He really enjoys being able to give patients a beautiful smile.

Hoppy’s interests include golf, motorcycles, cars and model helicopters. He and Viv ride all over New Zealand on his Harley 1200 Sportster enjoying the majestic scenery. Hoppy and Viv have been married for 40 years, and have 3 children. They have always worked together, and continue to do so today.

Ian retired from the practice in January 2016. Bill, Deepika and Brian will be continuing the care of his patients.

Our Oral Surgeons

Glenn KirkGlenn Kirk

Dr Glenn Kirk completed his degree in Dentistry in 1994, and worked as a dentist for five years. He then completed his MDS in Oral Surgery in 2005, graduating with Distinction. Since graduation Glenn has practiced as a Specialist Oral Surgeon in the Manawatu for the NZDF, MidCentral District Health Board and in Private Practice. He has since been welcomed back to Otago as an external examiner for the Masters Programme.

Glenn has a strong sense of ethical duty to provide affordable and accessible Oral Surgery to his patients in a relaxed environment.

Glenn is married with 3 daughters and loves cycling.


Graham SwanepoelGraham Swanepoel

Graham graduated with a BDS (NZDREX) from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in South Africa. He then completed the New Zealand Registered Exam in Otago. Born in South Africa, he practiced in Cape Town and worked as a Clinical Demonstrator at Stellenbosch and the University of Western Cape part time for a number of years. Graham arrived in New Zealand in 1998, and has set up practices in Wanganui, Marton and Palmerston North.

Graham is particularly interested in Orthodontics, and he also enjoys crown and bridge work.

Outside of work Graham enjoys painting, squash and cycling.


David Chin ShongDavid Chin Shong

David graduated Medicine in 1996 from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, and Dentistry in 2002 from University College Cork. He pursued his specialty training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in London and Liverpool, receiving his Consultant qualifications in 2006. David is Irish with an Asian father whom he credits with teaching him the importance of hard work and diligence, and an Irish mother who stressed people skills and the art of communication.

Despite his UK specialty training in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery, David’s outstanding interest is to make a patient’s experience, especially for those that are anxious, a positive one. From taking out a tooth or removing a skin cancer – ensuring the patient understands and feels in control of the process is his top priority.

David enjoys following his children’s sporting pursuits. Since moving to the Southern hemisphere he has been able to enjoy outdoor activities including camping, barbeques, and golf.

Kirsten KirkKirsten Kirk

Kirsten graduated from Otago with a Dip Dent Hyg in 2004. She is particularly committed to educating adults in maintaining good oral hygiene, and how it relates to their general oral health.

Kirsten is married to Glenn Kirk, and they have 3 daughters. She enjoys reading, and coaching her daughters netball teams.



Deb PrattDeb Pratt

Deb graduated with an Associate of Science (Dental Hygiene) from the University of Vermont, USA in 1995. Originally from the state of Vermont, Deb decided to leave the States in 2004, immigrating on her own to New Zealand in search of an adventure. She lived in Picton/Waikawa Bay for 10 years, before shifting to the Manawatu in 2014. She lives with her partner on his dairy farm in Kimbolton.

Deb enjoys making dental experiences as easy and as fun as possible for her patients.

She loves being outdoors, snowboarding, kayaking or touring on the motorbike.
